We appear to be learning from our mistakes in aftertreatment system maintenance, but we still have a way to go before we’re at peace with the things. Strictly speaking, diesel particulate filters, diesel oxidation catalysts, selective catalytic reduction systems and their associated hardware have proven pretty reliable over time. It’s not so much the basic hardware that stymies maintenance personnel, fleet managers and drivers, but the difficulty in predicting when maintenance is required or when upstream problems will cause downstream failures.
