Winter Fleet Fueling Tips

*AFS COLD WEATHER ALERT!!!!*

Proper maintenance of vehicle fuel tanks is essential part of achieving a trouble –free, lower-cost winter operation. The national supply chain has become more complex with refinery optimization changing fuel slates and obligated parties meeting the demands of the Renewable Fuel Standard, (RFS) program. These changes present special challenges that need to be addressed when winterizing your fuel to avoid fuel related problems.

Fuel Preparation During Winter Includes…

Fuel Additives: When temperatures drop a diesel fuel anti-gelling additive combined with a wax anti-settling agent should be added to your fuel tanks. Winter Blend: Ensure you have quality winter blended fuel in your tank.

Fuel Tank: Keep your fuel tank half full. Condensation can build up in tanks not kept filled. This water will ultimately impact your performance in extremely cold temperature, which can cause fuel line freezing and filter plugging. Watch H2O separators and saddle tanks for water accumulation, drain whenever possible.

Plan Ahead: Think in terms of your geography, where are you fueling and where are you heading. Blends in Boston may not be suitable for trips to Vermont.

Operation and Mechanical Check List 1.Brakes / Tires 2.Batteries / Ignition System 3.Radiators Coolant, hoses & belts 4.Fluid levels including , anti-freeze 5.Windshield wiper blades & de-icing washer fluid 6.Head, & tail lights , blinkers and emergency flashers 7.Fuel filters and air filters, what size micron range filter are you using? 8.Oil levels and power steering fluids 9.Door locks, which should be properly lubricated to avoid freezing. 10.A suitable technical partner to support you should you encounter downtime.
